MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang and the Supreme Court on Monday honored the fallen soldiers of Marawi as the nation observes the 119th Philippine Independence Day.

Malacañang said the names of killed soldiers would be broadcasted as a tribute to those killed fighting for the country in the Marawi clash, which has been going on for three weeks now.

“The names of our brave soldiers who died fighting Marawi City will be flashed on TV and read over the radio, with the sound of taps, at twelve noon as a tribute to their heroism for making the ultimate sacrifice for the flag and the country we dearly love,” the Palace said in a statement.

“We would likewise remember all the innocent victims who perished as a result of rebel atrocities,” it added.

Malacañang also encouraged the public to honor these heroes and civilians and asked for prayers for the bereaved families.

For its part, the Supreme Court also honored the fallen soldiers of Marawi as well as the heroes in the past.

Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno recognized that the heroes of the past and said their DNA lives on today in all those who continue to sacrifice for the nation to remain free.

“Our country remembers today all those who have fought for and continue to fight for our country's freedom and sovereignty. We celebrate the valor of our fallen heroes present and past, all of who sacrificed lives and wealth safety and comfort,” Sereno said.

“The Judiciary pays homage to all Filipino heroes, draws inspiration from them, reflects with sorrow on the fallen in Marawi and renews commitment to the people to defend their freedoms,” she added.

Last Friday, Malacañang released the names of 45 and police officers who were killed in action while fighting the ISIS-inspired local terror group, Maute group. On Saturday, 13 members of the Philippine Marines were added to the list.

The armed conflict in Marawi City started last May 23. President Rodrigo Duterte subsequently declared martial law in Mindanao to contain the violence in Lanao del Sur’s capital and nearby areas as well as neutralize the terror group.
