MANILA, Philippines -  President Duterte has rejected a plan by the Philippine National Police (PNP) to retrain erring policemen and insisted that those who committed wrongdoings should be suspended from the service.

“No, they will be suspended all over. Then, they will report in Malacañang, in my office.

in Malacañang, in my office. They should stay there until I decide on what to do with them,” Duterte said during a visit to his parents’ graves in Davao City on Saturday.

“Why would I train them? Retraining to become a better scalawag than what you are? You policemen, I am not a president from Manila. I’m not the weak leaders you choose from Manila, you fools,” he added.

Duterte even said that he would let rogue policemen eat water lilies in the Pasig River. The President has repeatedly complained the water lilies are preventing his boat from crossing the river.

The suspension would also cover agents of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) involved in wrongdoings, Duterte added.

Earlier, the PNP announced that 387 policemen from the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) have been sent to Camp Crame to undergo “disciplinary retraining” as part of its effort to cleanse its ranks.

NCRPO chief Director Oscar Albayalde admitted some of the 387 policemen are facing light offenses with the possibility that they may be acquitted.

“That’s why we recommended that they be subjected to a re-training for us to gather additional evidence against them,” Albayalde said.

“But because of President Duterte’s order, we have no recourse but to gather some information and evidence as we wanted to have an airtight case against them,” he said.

Duterte has vowed to purge the PNP of scalawags following the murder of South Korean businessman Jee Ick-joo at the hands of members of the police Anti-Illegal Drugs Group last year. He has also asked the NBI to produce the agents believed to be involved in the crime.

The President has also abolished all anti-drug units in the PNP and has barred policemen and NBI agents from joining the campaign against illegal drugs.  – Non Alquitran
