DFA to Filipinos in Berlin: Be vigilant, stay at home
MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Embassy in Berlin on Tuesday advised Filipinos there to remain vigilant and stay at home after a truck rammed into a Chrismas market in the German capital.
“In the meantime, the police has advised all to stay home tonight. We are confident that they and other city authorities are in control of the situation. Keep safe, kababayans!” Ambassador Melita Sta. Maria Thomeczek said in a statement.
The statement came after a truck rammed into a market in Berlin for an undetermined reason, leaving at least 12 people dead and almost 50 others injured.
Berlin's top security official, state interior minister Andreas Geisel, said in reports that that it was too early to say whether it was an attack, and that reports the truck may have been hijacked were "pure speculation."
Thomeczek said the Philippine Embassy has already contacted the Berlin police to inquire about casualties. The ambassador said there were no Filipino casualties in the crash.
“We pray for those who died and extend our sincere sympathies and condolences to their families. We hope and pray that the injured will survive,” Thomeczek said on the Philippines' behalf.
