Butchoy slows down, moves closer to Taiwan

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE 2 5:05 p.m.) — Typhoon "Butchoy" (international name "Nepartak") has slowed down as it continues to move closer to Taiwan, state weather bureau PAGASA said on Thursday.

At 34 p.m., the eye of the typhoon was located 160 km Northeast of Itbayat, Batanes with maximum sustained winds of 205 kilometers per hour (kph) and gusts of up to 240 kph. It is forecasted to move west northwest at 17 kph.

The typhoon is expected to exit the Philippine area of responsibility on Friday.

Tropical cyclone warning Signal No. 2 is raised in Batanes group of Islands while Signal No. 1 is hoisted in Babuyan group of Islands.

PAGASA warned that open sea wave height in areas under Signal No. 2 may reach from 4.1 to 12 meters. Storm surge is possible in coastal areas.

Areas under Signal No. 1 may experience wave height of 1.25 to 4 meters in open sea.
