MANILA, Philippines - With an endorsement from President Aquino, Interior and Local Government Secretary Manuel Roxas II already feels like a winner in next year’s elections, according to his wife broadcaster Korina Sanchez.

In a ceremony dubbed “A Gathering of Friends” at Club Filipino in Greenhills, San Juan City, the President made public for the first time his choice of Roxas as his preferred successor.

“Now that we have the actual appointment of the President, sabi ni Mar, ‘parang nanalo na rin ako’ (Mar said it’s like I’ve won already),” Sanchez told reporters after the formal announcement.

“I feel very happy for my husband. I think this is his calling. I’m very happy for him. I will always stand beside him wherever he goes,” Sanchez told reporters.

Sanchez also said President Aquino’s description of her husband “was so heartfelt.”

“I had tears in my eyes several times. Simple lang, kaya lang alam kong lahat ang pinagdadaan ni Mar, ng pangulo (It’s simple; it’s just that I know what Mar and the President have gone through). And to come to this point is really something emotional to all of us,” she added.

Sanchez, who was seated beside Roxas’ son from a previous relationship, said the senator has bravely accepted the President’s challenge.– With Christina Mendez
