UN chief hails peace deal between GPH, MILF
MANILA, Philippines - United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon on Monday welcomed the conclusion of the peace deal between the Philippine government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), seen to end the decades-long conflict that has so far claimed thousands of lives in Mindanao.
“The secretary-general welcomes the signing... of the last of the four annexes to the ‘Government of the Philippines-Moro Islamic Liberation Front Framework Agreement on the Bangsamoro’ of 2012,†a statement issued by Ban’s spokesperson said.
Ban said the completion of the formal negotiations paves the way for the signing of the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro, and congratulated the Philippine government and the MILF for “their perseverance, courage and commitment in having reached this important milestone in the peace process.â€
The Philippine government and the MILF completed on Saturday in Malaysia the peace talks and the annex on normalization, the fourth and final part of a peace deal that would create the Bangsamoro entity replacing the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.
The peace deal will give Muslims the power to rule a bigger state, in exchange for the decommissioning of the rebel group's weapons.
