Mikoy gets a lead role

Mikoy Morales delights at the new opportunity to display his acting in the GMA 7 News and Public Affairs show Sirkus that is set to premiere  tonight.

MANILA, Philippines — It looks like 2018 is set to bring many opportunities for Mikoy Morales who has already clinched a lead role in Sirkus, the GMA 7 News and Public Affairs’ initial offering to televiewers that is set to air every Sunday, 6:10 beginning tonight.

“Actually, it should be (aired) earlier than its premiere date but it was moved and for me, it’s a blessing in disguise because we had more time to prepare,” said Mikoy after a recent presscon. “And it’s a nice feeling to start the show when everyone is still feeling refreshed from the holidays.”

And while many are considering Sirkus as his biggest break, the Kapuso talent would rather see it as another opportunity to show what he’s got. Well, aside of course from his comedic flair that is best displayed in Bubble Gang and Pepito Manaloto.

“I think they deemed it as my (big) break because this is my first lead role. But don’t get me wrong I am not after a break where I am the bida who becomes a matinee idol with a primetime show to boot. I am not aspiring for that. What I’ll consider as my break is when I get a great material, win awards and be recognized for what I do. Perhaps, bonus na lang ‘yung maging matinee idol. When that break comes, there will new platforms for me.”

If you have already forgotten, Mikoy was among the lucky few showbiz wannabes who joined in the second season of GMA 7’s reality talent search Protégé: The Battle for The Big Artista Break several years ago. And obviously, not all of them were given a fair share of the entertainment spotlight. Thus, you cannot blame him for admitting that he had moments of doubts on his fate in showbiz several months after the said competition. Add to that the seemingly non-stop wondering of his parents on his non-participation every time a new show was launched.

Asked if he somehow harbored ill feelings then, Mikoy said, “Wala ng tampo, matagal ng nawala yun. Honestly, during that time I didn’t know my place in the industry yet and to think game na game ka after the competition and if you can’t handle the situation anymore, you easily give up kaya dun mo mare-realize kung bakit may mga artistang nawawala. If you do not have the heart for this, you won’t be able to persevere.”

Good thing, Mikoy didn’t give up what with the management truly letting him feel its support. “They were really patient with me and they told me that I’ll also find my place. Now I can say that I know my place in this industry kaya siguro dumating na din itong pagkakataon na ito.”

With co-star Mikee Quintos

In Sirkus, Mikoy is Miko who has a fraternal twin sister named Mia (played by Mikee Quintos). Their parents mysteriously disappear and together, Miko and Mia find themselves in the company of a traveling circus after trying to escape from the hands of an evil villainess. On the road, the twins discover secrets about their newfound family as well as their own identities.

Apart from acting, televiewers will also see Mikoy singing in some scenes with Mikee. Mikoy related that they also did some covers.

Asked to assess his being an actor, Mikoy said that he doesn’t look at acting as a job “because for me, it’s a lifestyle where one adjusts to every situation. My being an actor is one big progress and up until now, I’m still a work in progress.

“I can say that I have improved, I’m more confident and what is happening to me now is a sign that I am ready to do bigger things in terms of acting.”

(Sirkus, directed by Zig Dulay, also stars Cherie Gil, Sef Cadayona, Andre Paras, Chariz Solomon, Gardo Versoza, Zoren Legaspi, Angelu de Leon, Divine Tetay and Gerard Arca.)
