86 ‘Earthy’ beauties vie for title

FUNFARE - Ricky Lo - The Philippine Star
86 Earthy beauties vie for title

1. Miss Angola Ermelinda de Matos, 23, a Law graduate;

Curtain-raisers:

Lollie Mara (photo) won Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Ang Bagong Pamilya ni Ponching in the 2016 Cinemalaya and I’m congratulating her again now that, as she texted me, the movie is showing (until Thursday, Nov. 9) at eight SM Cinemas. She stars with Jackielou Blanco and Janus del Prado. Lollie is inviting friends to watch the movie before its mainstream run ends.

• Does poking a finger onto the palm of a person you are shaking hands with constitute, well, “sexual harassment?” Or is it simply  a subtle invitation to a very private encounter? A popular Hollywood actor who recently “outed” himself did that to a good-looking Asian journalist (a dead-ringer for Richard Gere, no less!) during a junket in L.A. Probably tickled pink (flattered, “honored”), the guy casually mentioned it to his colleagues who had long suspected about the actor’s sexual preference.

• Trolls are bashing Xander Ford for waving a wad of bills (amounting to P75,000) on social media as he thanks the bashers for making him more popular (talked-about, thus upping his market value). So what’s wrong with that? It is not as bad as stars flaunting their branded watches and other pieces of jewelry, clothes, shoes and bags, is it? Xander and those star showoffs are the same, except that Xander is way, way much too poor in comparison.

Tomorrow night (Nov. 4) at the Mall Of Asia (MOA) Arena, Ecuador’s Katherine Espin will relinquish her crown to one of the 86 hopefuls competing in the 17th Miss Earth pageant, to be aired as a TV special by ABS-CBN on Sunday morning, Nov. 5, starting at 10 o’clock, before ASAP and on TFC (The Filipino Channel) covering the Filipino community in 56 countries.

The event will also be telecast live on Fox Life and other networks of participating countries with live streaming on the Facebook page of Miss Earth. The pageant is ranked among the top four major beauty events in number of candidates and longevity (including Miss Universe, Miss World and Miss International).

As usual, Funfare’s “beauty experts” Felix Manuel and Celso de Guzman Caparas have drawn their annual lists of “most likely,” Felix with 18 and Celso with 15. They agreed on 12, shown “numbered” on this page:

The six others on Felix’s list: Misses Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Austria, Indonesia and Vietnam.

And the three others on Celso’s list: Misses Bosnia & Herzegovina, Russia and Serbia.
