The artist behind Hugot

Anton Juarez on feeling the instant success of his pop obra: It is mind-blowing and overwhelming.

Boy-next-door singer-songwriter Anton Juarez doesn’t mind being off spotlight. Besides, those who write music and lyrics usually let their songs do the talking.

Anton, raised in Cebu and belonging to a brood of musicians, is the young talent who wrote Hugot which is quickly gaining momentum as a debut digital single from Miko and Gab, embracing a topic we all Pinoys are too familiar — hugot lines.

“One evening last year, I wrote Hugot. It was from 11 p.m. to 3 in the morning. Me and my siblings are so excited about it,” said Anton whose brother Miko is one-half of the duo that recorded his composition as a signed artist of Star Music label.

Hugot, a delightful novelty piece that mixes pop and electronica, is now released in digital format, accessible via Spotify and iTunes, and is now No. 3 in FM station MOR 101.9 Top 10. The song, which now has a music video for fans to savor, was launched via a Facebook Live event. Netizens are raving about the duo and the song.

Anton, feeling the instant success of his pop obra and enjoying the attention it gets, exclaims, “It is mind-blowing and overwhelming!”

Hugot contains lines like “Mabuti pa ang pera nasusuklian/Ang pagmamahal ko hindi/Pag selfie nakangiti ka/Sa piling ko hindi.” In the chorus it apologetically states, “Patawarin mo ako sa mga hugot ko.”

In his mid-20s, Anton is now writing songs for other artists as well, including one for Yeng Constantino which he is collaborating with Star Music’s Jonathan Manalo. He penned a composition called Take It Easy which is an inspirational track scheduled for a lady singer to sing.

While he is packaged as a singer-songwriter talent for Asian Artists Agency, Inc., Anton takes the connection in stride. He does want to score hits for others first before he goes out into the limelight. That’s a mark of a true blue songwriter who allows his babies to shine and keep them nurtured.

Anton’s family, a picture of intactness with him and his siblings, once forming a band of their own called Game4, moved to Canada in 2011. They went back last year to give way to Miko’s participation to the Pinoy Boyband Superstar. With the showbiz breakthrough both he and Miko are enjoying, it is likely that they will stay here for good.

“I started writing songs at 13,” said Anton whose influences include Justin Bieber and Bruno Mars. “As an artist, I’m trying to be flexible, to be always new and fresh.”

Anton, who has a twin brother named Guill, plays guitar and does covers that he posts on social media to good traction. His band with siblings had Miko on drums, Guill on bass and rose-among-thorns Aiana doing vocals.

As follow-up to Hugot’s obvious triumph, Anton was commissioned to pen an anthemic song that he quickly delivered, this time writing it down one night from 9 p.m. to midnight. The song is called Restart Back to Love, recorded by an ensemble of recording artists, star-studded to say the least, and also including Miko and Gab. He said of the piece, “It’s about spreading awareness for people to stop hating each other and let love prevail and get us back on track.”

Indeed, the future for Anton sounds promising and bright.
