900 athletes with disabilities to join Palarong Pambansa

Janvic Mateo - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines -  Nine hundred student-athletes with disabilities will join the more than 10,000 delegates who will compete in the annual Palarong Pambansa in Antique this week.

The events for athletes enrolled in special education classes include athletics, goal ball and swimming, the Department of Education (DepEd) said over the weekend.

Dennis Esta, tournament manager for paragames, assured athletes with disabilities that they would be taken cared of during the competition.

“They are prioritized in the assignment of the billeting quarters and we ensured that these will be accessible for them,” Esta said.

Student-athletes with disabilities who will participate include those who are visually impaired, intellectually disabled and amputees.

Each region is allowed to field a maximum of 55 delegates composed of athletes and coaches for the paragames.

In addition to the medals for those who will finish first, second and third places, awards will also be given to fourth to eighth outstanding athletes per category.

DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones earlier highlighted the importance of including athletes with disabilities in the Palarong Pambansa.
