Maynilad earmarks P21 B for 4 new sewage facilities

MANILA, Philippines -  West Zone concessionaire Maynilad Water Services Inc. is investing P21 billion for the construction of four sewage treatment plants (STPs) in the next five years as part of its wastewater management program.

Maynilad will build four new STPs starting next year until 2022 that will have a combined treatment capacity of about 120 million cubic meters per year and will serve 2.1 million people.

The four STPs will be constructed in Kawit in Cavite, Las Piñas, Caloocan and Muntinlupa.

Maynilad said the P21.1 billion capital outlay would also include the installation of 160 kilometers of sewer lines for the conveyance systems.

“The construction of these new wastewater facilities is part of our effort to comply with the Supreme Court mandamus to help improve water quality in Manila Bay,” Maynilad president and CEO Ramoncito Fernandez said.

The new facilities are part of the P30.6-billion wastewater management program for 2018 until 2022. This will go to the upgrade of treatment technologies used in Maynilad’s existing STPs to make them compliant with the new effluent standards imposed by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

Approximately P318 million is intended for the procurement of 56 new vacuum truck units for increase offering of septic tank cleaning services to more customers.

The rest of the budget will go to sewer network repair and rehabilitation, lot acquisitions, and retrofitting of wastewater facilities, among others.

Maynilad’s five-year wastewater management program, which will be funded by loans from local and international banks and by internally generated funds, is expected to generate about 93,500 jobs.

To date, the company’s wastewater infrastructure is comprised of 20 STPs, three septage treatment plants, 41 sewage pumping stations, 22 lift stations, and over 500 kilometers of sewer lines.

Maynilad is the largest private water concessionaire in the country in terms of customer base. It serves the areas of Caloocan, Pasay, Parañaque, Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, Valenzuela, Navotas, Malabon, and certain portions of Manila, Quezon City, Makati and Cavite.

It is owned and managed by Maynilad Water Holdings Co. Inc. a joint venture between Metro Pacific Investments Corp., DMCI Holdings Inc., and Marubeni Corp.
