ICTSI gets new cranes for Congo terminal

Louella Desiderio - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines – The new container and cargo terminal of International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI) in the Democratic Republic of Congo has received the first of two new mobile cranes.

ICTSI said the Terex Model 5 crane designed to serve the Panamax class or mid-sized container ships would be used at the Matadi Gateway Terminal (MGT) which is scheduled to start operations within the current quarter.

The second crane is expected to arrive next month.

Both cranes would be operating with an automatic twin-lift spreader and provide heavy lift capability.

“This new unit is a game changer. It is the first unit of its kind in Matadi and will deliver high performance and faster vessel turnaround times,” MGT chief executive officer Tim Vancampen said.

Vancampen said the arrival of the second unit would also allow the terminal to serve larger gearless vessels.

Other key equipment to be deployed at the terminal are reach stackers and front loaders as well as the Navis N4 operating system for efficient management of vessel loading or unloading and terminal operations.

MGT is a joint venture company between ICTSI, the Ledya Group, and Societe Commerciale Des Transports Et Des Ports SA.
