All set for 4th Boaters Unlimited fishing tourney

CEBU, Philippines — The long wait is over for Cebuano anglers and sport fishing fans from other regions as the fourth edition of Boaters Unlimited Cebu Fishing Tournament will finally take place on May 17-19 at the JPark Island Resort in Barangay Maribago, Lapu-Lapu City.

The competition area covers the sea surrounding the whole Mactan Island from Lapu-Lapu City to Cordova, Olango Island and Caubian Islands.

Over a hundred anglers from Cebu and other provinces are expected to see action in the three-day event that is being held in partnership with the Department of Tourism, Lapu-Lapu City Government, and WinZir among others.

To recall, the first and second BU tourneys were held at the same venue before it was temporarily transferred to Cebu Yacht Club last year.

Among those expected to join in this year’s edition of the annual tilt is PBA legend Ramon “El Presidente” Fernandez. Only a few knew that the former four-time PBA MVP and commissioner of the Philippine Sports Commission is also a fishing enthusiast.

Another competitor to watch out is a Korean angler who will be teaming-up with locals.

While there are teams with 8-10 members, they will be judged by individual catch. The heaviest haul wins the championship.

A total of P220,000 in cash prize awaits the winners.

There are also special prizes to those with most catch, longest catch, toothy catch, colorful catch and rare-specie catch.

Competitors may use any of these techniques: jigging, casting, trolling, popping or bait and wait techniques in catching their fish.

Rays and sharks and those considered endangered and protected species by Philippine laws are not allowed, and should be released back to the sea.

Last year, Don Zaldivar of the Iligan Anglers Club emerged as champion with his 12.55 kgs. Dogtooth Tuna.
