Naki Warriors score twinkill in PCAP tourney

CEBU, Philippines —  The rejuvenated Lapu-Lapu City Naki Warriors pulled off a rare twinkill in the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) Open Conference on Wednesday night via lichess platform.

Powered by National Masters Elwin Retanal and Edsel Montoya and Woman International Master Bernadette Galas, the Naki Warriors first cruised to a 14-7 triumph over the Surigao Fianchetto Checkmates.

With the trio ably backed up by Anthony Makinano, Bryle Arellano and Alan Pason, the Naki Warriors trounced the Checkmates in the blitz segment, 6-1, before closing out their rivals in rapid event, 8-6.

The Naki Warriors then prevailed over the equally-tough Toledo City Trojans, 12.5-8.5.

After figuring in a 3.5-3.5 stalemate in blitz, the Naki Warriors went on to vanquish the Trojans in rapid play, 9-5, to notch their third win in five starts.

The Trojans did not go home empty-handed though as they earlier bested the Iriga Oragons, 12.5-8.5, to forge a three-way tie with the Naki Warriors and Fianchetto Checkmates on identical 3-2 records.

On the other hand, the Cordova Dutchess Dagami Warriors trounced the Cebu City Machers, 15-6, in another all-Cebu duel.

It was a woeful double trouble for the Machers, who were also decimated by the formidable Iloilo Kisela Knights, 2.5-18.5.

Iloilo, thus, firmed up its grip of the solo Southern Division lead with a perfect 5-0 slate while Cebu City further wallowed down the cellar without victory in four starts. — EBV
