DU30's Team vs. OFWs in Kuwait

PERSPECTIVE - Cherry Piquero Ballescas - The Freeman

A recent FB post noted: "Cayetano resignation necessary to resolve PH standoff with Kuwait. Decisive Mayor President agonizes in choosing between political career of Cayetano and welfare of 260,000 OFWs in Kuwait. One lousy job versus 260,000 family survival jobs."

Why did DU30 not reprimand or fire Cayetano and his fake news team? Cayetano et al caused the diplomatic blunder. DU30 responds with another ban threat with Kuwait and asked OFWs in Kuwait to come home.

Why is Du30 clearly favoring Cayetano and the fake news team more than our OFWs in Kuwait? Should not Du30 fire Cayetano and his team instead?Needed: a wiser, comprehensive approach to the Kuwaiti issue please.

In a PhilStar article, career officers at the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) wrote DU30 about Cayetano and his top aides' " gross incompetence that led to the diplomatic standoff with Kuwait. Having no vision on foreign policy, Cayetano and his top aides miscalculated Kuwaiti reaction to the controversial rescue missions of distressed Filipino housemaids."

Further, they noted that "Cayetano's amateurism and inexperience threaten to jeopardize the welfare of 230,000 Filipino workers in Kuwait." The officers demanded the resignation of Cayetano and his appointees in the foreign service "to spare the Philippines from further diplomatic embarrassments." They pointed to Cayetano's glaring " lack of foresight and wisdom on other foreign policy issues such as the West Philippine Sea, withdrawal of International Criminal Court membership, rejection of European Union (EU) aid and UN human rights."

They also asked for the resignation of "DFA Undersecretary for Migrant Workers Affairs Sarah Lou Arriola , a non-career official with no experience whatsoever in dealing with Filipino migrant workers, whose only visible credential is her close ties with Cayetano" and who "authorized the dispatch of rapid response teams (RRT) to Kuwait whose marching orders were to conduct more rescue of distressed Filipino housemaids, take videos of the rescue and upload them in FB (Facebook) for the whole world to see."

The Senate should also investigate this bungled Kuwaiti "publicity dubbed rescue" stint of Cayetano et.al. Was that a real "rescue" and the best option to take? How much public funds were used for this rescue or publicity stunt? Were the so-called rescued Filipinos genuine victims of abuse? Where are these rescued victims now?

Du3o has asked the OFWs in Kuwait to come home. Can the Philippines immediately absorb 200,000 plus Filipino workers back from Kuwait? Latest Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey showed adult joblessness at 23.9 percent in March 2018 compared to 15.7 percent last December 2017. Have the victims of Marawi been given jobs? What about those in Boracay?

Of course, the abuse of our people, whether here or abroad, should not be tolerated and should be addressed appropriately and promptly. However, leave the experts and the qualified to do this job, provide them with adequate support and responsive networks.

The incompetent and the publicity seeker should never be allowed to attempt any ill-planned rescue, squander public funds, and compromise our OFWs with diplomatic blunders. The incompetent who do should be duly punished, fired, and dismissed from office immediately!

Why is Du30 not doing that? Why is he appointing and then protecting the incompetent? Is Du30 the President of a favored few incompetent or the elected leader of millions of hardworking local and overseas Filipinos?

If we want our people to stay home and not migrate, let us protect our people with sustainable, secure jobs, sufficient salary. Support our food producers, empower our women. Protect our territory and ensure competent, genuine, honest governance and public service.
