Police probes barangay councilman killing

DUMAGUETE CITY, Philippines — The Negros Oriental Provincial Police Office has continued to look for clues on the shooting-to-death of a barangay councilman in Valencia town over the weekend.

Chief Inspector Alfonso Enriquez, Valencia Police chief, said it was not yet clear what was the motive behind the killing of Councilman Rene Delfino, of Barangay Mampas in Valencia.

Enriquez said initial police investigation showed that around 2:40 p.m. Saturday, Delfino was riding his motorcycle at Barangay South Poblacion, Valencia, during a cortege to the cemetery for the interment of his relative.

A lone man, wearing a bull cap and a mask that covered his face and also riding a motorcycle, tailed Delfino and shot the latter three times on his head and back, the police report said.

The gunman immediately fled heading eastward. Police recovered from the crime scene three pieces of empty shells of a .45-caliber gun, the police report added. (FREEMAN)
