Dagohoy’s special public holiday

CEBUPEDIA - Clarence Paul Oaminal - The Freeman

President Ferdinand Marcos was a student of history, and he reminded the nation of the heroism of Francisco “Dagohoy” Sendrijas in his revolt against Spain. Dagohoy stands for “Dagon sa Hoyohoy”, in English it means “talisman of the breeze”. Dagohoy’s revolution was an inspiration to the Cebuanos’ rising up against Spain in later years.

This was President Marcos’ proclamation issued during his first term as the country’s chief executive:

BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE PHILIPPINES

PROCLAMATION NO. 257

WHEREAS, Wednesday, August 30, 1967, marks the successful revolt of Dagohoy against Spanish tyranny in Bohol; and

WHEREAS, the people of Bohol should be afforded an opportunity to celebrate the occasion with fitting ceremonies and to render tribute to Dagohoy’s exemplary love of country;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, FERDINAND E. MARCOS, President of the Philippines, by virtue of the authority vested in me by Section 30 of the Revised Administrative Code, do hereby declare Wednesday, August 30, 1967, as a special public holiday in the Province of Bohol and Tagbilaran City.
