New democracy

VERBAL VARIETY - Annie Fe Perez - The Freeman

As the United States waits patiently for its new president as of this writing, the rest of the world also waited. It is as if it is a global election. Every move of this world superpower could affect every nation’s economy. While it is true to some extent, the Filipinos are also going gaga over the election.

We have to admit that the plot of a politician complaining of being cheated is an old template, one that we are so familiar with. These are the traditional politicians of “trapos”, they cannot accept defeat simply because they want to stay in their position. The power that gets them by gives them a cut above the rest. Sitting down as the president in a powerful country such as America doesn’t only give you a cut, but a sense of being on a pedestal.

Well, I’m not so keen about Trump or about Biden and what they have done for America. All I know is that Trump has made decisions that shocked many living in their country, especially immigrants. They said America has lost its sense of being the melting pot of cultures as it has failed to keep its promise of opening its doors open to all who want to come and work there. Their economy dived down similar to what was happening in our country. If the change they wanted will happen, a lot of people will benefit, including Filipinos working abroad.

What’s in it for us here in the Philippines? Well for one I think that our administration will look for other countries to lean on or at some point lose its grip on whatever addiction it has to power. It will be an example that if everybody goes out to vote because of their desperation to change the way things are, it can really happen. That is my wish for this country as we approach the national elections.

I used to skip my right to vote due to work circumstances, but this time I want to make it a point to make my vote count and not let it go to waste. I am sick and tired of failed promises, conversations that have no point, and plans that have yet to be seen. Instead of reaching for the promised change we are pushed to the edge until we no longer have what it takes. I miss the days when I do not have to live in uncertainty and fear, that our country will rise to be one of the economic tigers in Asia. Today it’s all seems all a blur, even our neighbors in Southeast Asia are way ahead of us in almost all aspects.

The outcome of the election spells how America and the rest of world will be. I only wish that whoever wins, he will place the welfare of everyone before his.
