Give love

VERBAL VARIETY - Annie Fe Perez - The Freeman

Yesterday was Valentine’s Day and I’m currently in Singapore - a country where everyone moves so fast and barely has any time for love. Actually, I never even felt that it was Valentine’s Day here. There are no heart-shaped decorations, treats, flowers, or and whatever. It seemed like there is no concept of love that is too visible. I miss the way it is back in our country where everyone would make a big deal out of it. On this day, a lot of couples would be seen walking hand-in-hand in the street with the females holding a bouquet of flowers. Other government offices implemented a color-coding in their apparel for the day where a color represents your marital status or feelings.

Love is a very fast concept that defining it in a few words on a slam book is very difficult. We can talk about superficial love that is linked to materialism, but the highest form of love is sacrifice for another. Just like how Jesus gave himself up for the rest of the world to be saved from their sins is the true epitome of love.

Just this week, we saw how the solicitor general went out of his way to file a quo warranto petition against giant TV network ABS-CBN. His move shocked all of the country, including fans of the network. But what made this situation unique is the display of love for other media outlets showed for ABS-CBN. Rival networks, civic groups, other media outlets and the academe poured in their support for ABS-CBN. They went out of their comfort zone to display support and show their love for the craft, the craft that is not supposed to be abused. They want to uphold a friendly competition and the retention of press freedom.

If keeping their own business would have been the concern, then they wouldn’t go all-out against the shutdown of ABS-CBN. But this you see, is an act of pure love for one another. The concern that they give is like having genuine affection for fellowmen. Of course, nobody deserves to go down without a decent fight. All entities deserve to be heard, thus we all crossing fingers that the bill for the renewal of the franchise would come out first and overpower the quo warranto petition. Yet, whatever happens God will take care of the thousands of employees who are at risk of losing their jobs.

Could I really say that love is in the air? With all that is going on right now, I guess so. We Filipinos haven’t forgotten how to show others that we care. It is a trait that we wouldn’t trade for anything else. With everything that we are going through right now, show that you care and love one another. There isn’t any other lifetime anymore to do so. Make the most of it.
