Off to a wrong start

We should be humble in victory and gracious in defeat. I hope that Senator-elect Nancy Binay should be reminded of that maxim that is essential to everyday life.

Now that her triumph in the just concluded mid-term polls is as clear as daylight, Binay is unleashing remarks that appears to be distasteful of a true victor. First, she thanked Vice Ganda for the latter's remarks of "Senator Ka Agad" implying her lack of sufficient political background that would qualify her to hold such a lofty public office.

I 've seen that episode in 'Gandang Gabi Vice' over ABC-CBN and I could say that Vice Ganda was just honest enough in expressing his thoughts. But Nancy perceived Vice's pronouncements offensive to her person even though she was quick to shrug it off by saying she had no qualms about it because she has her own "Vice", referring to her more illustrious father, Vice President Jejomar Binay.  Now why thank Vice Ganda for what she feels a stinging tirade at her?

After the popular actor, comedian and TV host, Nancy Binay trained her guns next on Risa Hontiveros-Baraquel. A day after the elections, Nancy issued a press statement saying that she is hoping Hontiveros would also win a Senate seat so that they could finally debate on certain issues. We all know that Hontiveros is several notches away from the Magic 12 and in no way would enter the hallways of the hallowed Senate as one of its distinguished members.

The way I deciphered it, Nancy was simply kicking off an already down person. Good for her that Hontiveros did not make it because I'm sure that she could not match-up the eloquence, wit and sharp-mindedness of Hontiveros if ever they will be given a chance to slug it out on the Senate floor or wherever the venue may be.

My conviction ever since is that Nancy is just using the popularity of her father as a launching pad to Senate glory. Now that sweeping victory is in her grasp, the least Nancy could do is to be humble. She must veer away from making any unnecessary comments that will just tarnish the fresh image of what we have of her at the moment. Maybe in that manner she can gain our respect and admiration, and eventually convince us that she is worthy enough to be addressed Madame Senator by the Filipino people.
