Execs: Widen road to avoid congestion

CEBU, Philippines - The road widening project from the municipality of Liloan passing Compostela town to Danao City is one of the medium-term proposals raised to decongest the traffic problem in northern Metro Cebu towns.

The proposal included in the Roadmap Study for Sustainable Urban Development in Metro Cebu presented by ALMEC Corporation Oriental Consultants Co. Ltd.

The initial study, conducted with the help of the Japan International Cooperation Agency, was presented to the members of the Metro Cebu Development and Coordinating Board during their recent meeting in Cordova town.

Although the study mainly focuses on the growth of the whole Metro Cebu in terms of economic development, it also outlines a plan to solve the traffic congestion problem in the towns.

The Cebu North Coastal Road from Mandaue City to Liloan town is said to initially solve the traffic problem in the place but the four-lane road construction stopped.

The lack of funds and the problem of road right of way have been cited as challenges encountered by the Department of Public Works and Highways.

The Cebu North Coastal Road was made possible during the incumbency of former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

The late press secretary Cerge Remonde also served responsible for the realization of the project.

The municipal officials of Consolacion and Liloan have urged the DPWH to complete the Mandaue-Liloan road widening projects.

Cebu Ports Authority General Manager Edmund Tan, during the meeting with the members of the  Metro Cebu Development and Coordinating Board, also aired his concerns on the need to complete the four-lane road projects on Cebu North Coastal Road. — Jose P. Sollano (FREEMAN)
