Talisay urges Capitol to rehabilitate park

CEBU, Philippines -  The Talisay City Council wants Capitol to rehabilitate Liberation Park, which is one of the national historical shrines in the city.

Councilor Danilo Caballero said the park no longer served its purpose because its facilities are on their last legs and therefore unsafe for children.

“The Talisay City Liberation Park in Poblacion is not only for the city but also for the entire province of Cebu,” Caballero said.

Last 2012, the city received a presidential award for being a child-friendly city.

The Liberation Park has been declared a national historical shrine as it marks the spot where American forces made the historic beachhead landing on March 26, 1945.

In December 2009, vandals dismembered the statues’ hands and detached the figures’ firearms.

The city government has spent a big sum on the project as the first set of statues had to be removed for having sub-standard quality.

The private contractor had to replace the original statues because they became the butt of jokes among local residents because of their unusually slender bodies, long necks, and large eyes.

The replacement came after the city celebrated the 2009 American Landing.  (FREEMAN)
