Talisay dog pound kills 65 thru lethal injection
CEBU, Philippines - The Talisay City dog pound last week put to death through lethal injection 65 stray dogs in its bid to prevent the spread of rabies.
City veterinarian Dr. Santiago Hortel said most of the dogs were surrendered by owners who feared their pets posed a threat to other people.
The rest were stray dogs that remained unclaimed after three days at the pound.
In the past, gassing of dogs was the vogue until it became an issue and was stopped.
The dog pound remained closed from January to June this year but when the new administration took over city hall on the first week of July this year, it re-opened.
Hortel said the chemical for the injections came from the provincial veterinarian office.
The provincial veterinarian office spent P120 for each injection while the city provided the lot at the landfill in barangay Tapul for the grave.
In preparation for the Iron Man Triathlon at the Cebu South Coastal Road, the dog pound, from Thursday to Sunday, caught about 30 stray dogs.
The dog pound has four cages for captured dogs and each cage has a capacity for 15 dogs. — (FREEMAN)
