Adulting

HAYUP SA GALING - Annie Fe Perez - The Freeman

It is a term often used by millennials these days who are in a fuzz of trying to move on from being a youth and entering in unfamiliar world where responsibility is key to survival and childhood games or crushes do not amuse you anymore. Ideally, you are considered an adult when he or she hits the age of 18 which is the legal age in our country. But for some, it is when they finish their bachelor's degree, find a job, and start a new life.

Oftentimes, it is hard especially when parents want you to grow up and be independent at the same time maintain some kind of control over your life, and from your perspective, you just want parents to leave you alone but when challenges come your way, you want them to help you. That's why millennials are often tagged as lazy and entitled. You are lost wanderers in the big world that you have just stepped in.

Adulting for me is when you have to pay for your own taxes (apart from what the company deducts from your salary). My trip to the Bureau of Internal Revenue was not at all fruitful, having to pay fines for not paying taxes on time and for the failure to liquidate my expenses for the quarter. It occurred to me that at this moment in time, I am now in control of my life and my money. Thus, utmost care is needed.

Then there are the many other documents that I have to obtain myself from government offices. Having to hold cards and papers with seals of different agencies make it all a lot different back when I was still a student.

But those with no guidance whatsoever are left to find themselves in a pit of trying to be in the trend for the fear of missing out exists. People my age are busy booking early flights, travelling, or buying expensive gadgets as if they don't have a future to look forward to.

The recent hype now is a concert that is to be held in the Philippines by a hit British rock band. A VIP ticket costs more than my monthly salary, not including the payment for airfare, accommodation, and food. Unless of course, there is a plan to go rogue, not eat at all, and sleep on the streets.

Feedbacks everywhere are way over the top, with millennials kidding aside to sell their kidneys and gadgets for a ticket that could change their lives or so they thought. How can one band be worth all the money they could have? Well, I have a few bands that would like to see in my lifetime but if my wallet says no then there is no need to feed my hungry ego. They could always wait or simply put - I couldn't afford it even if I wanted to.

Sometimes the need to belong or to force oneself to be trendy could be the biggest mistake of a person who is in the midst of trying to put a life before them. Sooner or later, mom and dad will stop paying for your internet bills which you use to stalk your imaginary forever on Facebook. I guess it's time to be real and pay attention to real goals in life - like getting a car, having a healthy lifestyle, a new degree perhaps, or lifetime savings.

Those next in line to govern and run offices are the millennials today. In no time, there will be another disconnect between this generation and that thereafter who are more lenient and dependent on technology. It is a gap we cannot fix but there are principles that we can make right today and pass it on tomorrow.

Adulting may be the happiest thing to experience in this day and time but certainly the lessons are worth the hardships, pain, and experiences. Will that VIP ticket still be worth it? I guess it is time to think again. Well, I'd rather pay for my taxes.
