Cop dies in road mishap

Romeo D. Marantal - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — A policeman died after his motorcycle crashed into a trailer truck parked along the national highway in Sitio Gahad, Barangay Poblacion, Sibonga, Cebu past 11 pm on Tuesday, May 7, 2024.

The fatality was identified as Patrolman John Anthony Quintao, a native of Siaton town in Negros Oriental. Quintao was on his way to report for duty at the headquarters of the Regional Mobile Force Battalion in Sibonga when the incident happened.

Initial investigation conducted by the Sibonga Municipal Police Station shows the trailer truck driven by Tereso Sumbaquil dela Rosa was illegally parked on the roadside. The truck’s engine was off but the hazard lights were allegedly on. However, there was no early warning device that could have warned oncoming motorists.

Quintao rammed his motorcycle into the truck causing severe injury that cost his life.

He was taken to the Carcar District Hospital but was declared dead on arrival by the attending physician.

The truck driver was immediately taken into police custody while a criminal complaint for reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and damage to property is being prepared by the Sibonga Police Station.

The Regional Mobile Force Battalion (RMFB)-7 promised that financial assistance will be extended to the family of Quintao.

"His bravery, courage, and countless contributions will be honored in our hearts forever," RMBF-7 posted on its Facebook page. — /FPL (FREEMAN)
