CEBU, Philippines — A Negrense lawyer topped the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP)-Cebu Chapter online chess tournament billed as “A Lawyer’s Gambit” and played on lichess platform over the weekend.
Jason M. Bandal of IBP-Negros Oriental bagged the title after completing the 9-round Swiss system competition with the highest output of 8.0 points.
Paullolindo A. Elauria of IBP-Manila took the second place honors with 7.5 points while IBP-Cebu’s bet William B. Cordova placed third with 7.0 points.
The two-hour virtual tilt drew an elite field of lawyer pawnpushers that included Woman International Master Sherily Cua, who landed at 10th spot with 6.0 points. Cua is the top lady player of the Pasig King Pirates that saw action in the inaugural Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP)-All Filipino Conference.
Held in partnership with the Toledo City Trojans through their co-team owner Jeah Jean Gacang, the fund-raising event was made possible through the efforts of IBP-Cebu under the leadership of Cheryl Pamela Condat and stress-free committee chairperson Jonathan Villegas.
Proceeds will go to the IBP-Cebu Community Pantry co-chaired by Arra De la Peña and Jorg Burdeos. — EBV
