CEBU, Philippines —  Cebuano contenders Toledo City Trojans, Lapu-Lapu City Naki Warriors, and Cordova Dagami Dutchess Warriors again split their games in the third and final elimination stage of the inaugural Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) online tournament last Saturday night on lichess platform.

The Trojans of playing co-team owner Atty. Jeah Jean Gacang, team manager FA Felix Poloyapoy Jr., skipper Bonn Rainauld Tibod, International Master Rico Mascariñas, National Masters Rommel Ganzon and Rogelio Enriquez, Jr., Ronald Ganzon, Richard Natividad, Glicerio Pardillo Jr., Christopher Tubalado, and Jinky Catulay reaffirmed their dominance over the Naki Warriors, 12.5-8.5, but bowed anew to the powerhouse Negros Kingsmen, 9.5-11.5.

The Lapu-Lapu City Naki Warriors of NM Merben Roque, Aldwin Daculan, Bryle Arellano, Cristy Cabungcag, Odilon Badilles, Romeo Resuera, Neil Adrian Gilig, and Kraig Quinain quickly rebounded though with a 17.5-3.5 thrashing of the skidding Cebu City Machers.

It was another double whammy for the Machers of NM Elwin Retanal, FIDE Master Anthony Makinano, International Artiber Linky Yap, Mark Mangubat, Cephas Seguisabal, Eduard De la Torre and Marphine Faith Mangubat as they also got beaten by the Iloilo Kisela Knights, 6-15.

On the other hand, the Cordova Dutchess Dagami Warriors of NMs Edsel Montoya and Mario Mangubat, Women’s International Master Bernadette Galas, PCAP Vice Chairman Ariel Potot, Allan Pason, Rex Androe Cabuncal, Francisco Rivera, and Dione Patrick Minoza split their games. They lost via 10-11 cliffhanger to the Zamboanga Sultans but bounced back with a 14.5-6.5 drubbing of the Iriga Oragons.

Of the four Cebu teams seeing action in the country’s first ever pro chess league, Toledo stayed as the highest ranked at joint fourth and fifth with Zamboanga in the Southern Conference standings on identical 15-12 win-loss record. Lapu-Lapu is at sixth with a 12-15 card, Cordova eighth with a 9-18 mark and Cebu City 10th with only five wins in 27 matches. — EBV
