KCS off to flying start

CEBU, Philippines — The Kiboy’s Computer Solutions served early notice on its serious title campaign after it blasted ASPA, 91-69, at the start of the Mayor Edgardo C. Labella 1st Charter Cup Basketball Tournament last Tuesday night at the Cebu City Sports Institute gym.

Vincent Minguito topscored with 19 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals while Gabriel Cometa added 16 points, five steals, three rebounds and one assist for KCS.

Arman Lao also caught part of the spotlight with a solid double-double show of 15 points and 11 rebounds laced with five assists for KCS, which was in full command since greeting the match with a 11-4 blitz.

Ahead 42-33 at halftime, KCS grew even fiercer in the third period to blow up their lead to 17 points, 68-51, going into the final 10 minutes of the contest. KCS sustained its momentum the rest of the way to come up with a 22-point rout.

In the other games, the ARQ Builders/KSB Glass survived a dogfight against Athalia 1 on 1, 96-92, while the Cebu City Councilor Dondon Hontiveros-led Fighter 50 Wine launched a sizzling endgame attack to trounce LM Paragsa, 74-62.

Hercules Tangkay exploded for 32 points on top of four rebounds and two assists for ARQ Builders. He was ably backed up by Ferdinand Lusdoc with 19 points and eight rebounds and Jerick Cañada with 15 points, two rebounds and two assists.

On the other hand, Jaybie Mantilla paced Fighter 50 with 13 points, seven rebounds, eight assists and six steals in an all-around hardcourt performance. Benik Sealana scored 12, while Alpi Amarante contributed 11 points, nine rebounds, and two steals.

Hontiveros finished with nine points, six rebounds, five assists, and two blocks for the Wine Makers, who held off LMP to a single point in the last five minutes of play while tallying nine to ease through a double-digit victory.

The week-long tournament is bankrolled by the city government of Cebu under the flagship of mayor Edgar Labella through the Cebu City Sports Commission headed by chairman Ed Hayco. Games are under the supervision of commissioner Atty. Rey Gealon assisted by CSCC executive director Amilo Lopez and tournament organizer Allen Ceballos. EBV
