Casimero vs Inoue unification bout a done deal, says report
CEBU, Philippines — Barring any hitches, reigning WBO bantamweight champion John Riel “Cuadro Alas” Casimero (29-4, 20KOs) will slug it out with the undefeated IBF/WBA 118-pound titleholder Naoya “Monster” Inoue (19-0, 16KOs) of Japan in a surefire blockbuster unification bout on April 25 in Las Vegas.
In report by Keith Idec of BoxingScene.com, the fight marks Inoue’s debut with Top Rank of Bob Arum and will be broadcast live via satellite on ESPN.
The venue has not yet been set as of the moment but the megafight will most likely take place at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.
Idec further stated that “an official announcement of the Inoue-Casimero match will be made in the coming weeks”.
The 30-year-old Casimero, a three-division world champion who once held court in the IBF flyweight and IBF/WBO light flyweight divisions, was ecstatic upon learning the news.
“It feels great. I want to shock the world,” the fighting pride of Ormoc City blurted out in his Facebook page.
Casimero won the WBO bantamweight title after pulling off a stunning third-round stoppage of Zolani Tete (28-4, 21KOs) of South Africa on November 30 last year in Birmingham, England.
Three weeks before that, Inoue survived a brutal and bloody 12-round war against former four-division world champion Nonito Donaire Jr. to eke out a unanimous decision victory in the World Boxing Super Series bantamweight finals on November 7, 2019 in Saitama, Japan.
After his epic triumph over Donaire, Inoue signed a multi-fight contract with Arum, who once charted the career path of Casimero’s more illustrious compatriot Manny Pacquiao.
Interestingly, Pacquiao’s MP Promotions is currently the promoter of Casimero.
