SWU, USC clash for solo lead

CEBU, Philippines —  The Southwestern University (SWU)-Phinma Cobras and the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars shoot for their second straight win when they go up against separate opponents in the seniors division of the 19th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) men’s basketball tournament today at the Cebu Coliseum.

The Southwestern University (SWU)-Phinma Cobras and the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors both train their sights on the solo leadership in the seniors division as they clash head-on in the 19th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) men’s basketball tournament today at the Cebu Coliseum.

Southwestern U is currently on top of the heap with back-to-back conquests of the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters, 66-58, and the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers, 86-66, but the Warriors are closely breathing down their neck with a 3-1 win-loss slate.

After getting clobbered by three-time defending champions University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers, 74-53, last September 12, the Warriors bounced back with two victories in a row against the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars, 63-55, and the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) Wildcats, 81-74, five nights ago.

The Warriors will go up against the Cobras at 3:30 p.m., right before the UC Webmasters and the USJ-R Jaguars shoot for their second win when they face off each other in the main game of a heavy quadruple-header scheduled at 5 pm.

The Webmasters are coming off a morale-boosting 72-64 upset of UV that ended their two-game slide, but the Green Lancers rebounded with fire in their eyes and vented their wrath of the CIT-U Wildcats via a 40-point rout, 105-65, last Thursday evening.

Meanwhile, in the juniors division, the UC Junior Webmasters will try to stretch their unbeaten run to 3-0 as they tackle the listless CIT-U Baby Wildcats (0-2) at 2 p.m. while the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagles hope to have their first taste of triumph when they battle the 1-1 Don Bosco Greywolves in the 12:30 p.m. opener.
