Madridejos stays perfect in Governor’s Cup caging

CEBU, Philippines — For the past two years, they have been bottom feeders.

Now, the Lawisanons of Madridejos in Bantayan Island suddenly found themselves on top of the standings, taking pride as one of the only two unbeaten teams in the 4th District cluster of the 2019 Cebu Governor’s Cup Inter-Cities and Municipalities Under 21 Developmental Basketball Tournament.

Energized by their hometown fans who cheered for them to the top of their lungs last Saturday night at the jampacked Madridejos Sports and Cultural Center, Team Madridejos of coach Renato “Molong” Rosales trounced the visiting Tabogon, 102-90, to seize the solo lead in the 4th District with an immaculate 3-0 slate, one full game ahead of the 2-0 Medellin Sweeteners.

“Team work did it for us. We always play as a team. Also, our players are very dedicated. Even in practice, you can see their determination,” said Madridejos team coordinator Owen Daruca.

As of this writing last night, Madridejos was still slugging it out with its neighbor Santa Fe. A victory would ensure the Lawisanons of a quarterfinal slot and at least a P50,000 bonus going into the next round.

In the other 4th District games, San Remigio bested Sante Fe, 81-77, in a battle of winless squads, while Bogo City downed Tabuelan, 78-68, to go 2-1.

San Remigio snapped out of its three-game jinx, Santa Fe further wallowed down the cellar a pitiful 0-4 record, while Bogo and Tabogon stand with an even 2-1 cards.

Over at the Carcar Sports Complex for the the 1st District action, the Naga City Electrifiers vanquished the San Fernando Spartans, 73-67, while the Carcar Lechoneros prolonged the misery of the Sibonga Pillars, 78-61.

Naga improved to 3-1, Carcar and San Fernando are tied at 2-2 while Sibonga, last year’s finalists in the Southern Division, remained listless in four matches.

At the Tuburan municipal gym, Tuburan seized the solo lead in 3rd District with a 3-1 mark after decimating the hapless Barili, 106-75.

In the 2nd District, Santander escaped past Boljoon, 70-68, to end their three-game skid, while Samboan blasted Alcoy, 93-79, to stay on top of the heap with only one defeat in four starts. (EBV)
