Peteros stamps class in Little Wesley So Cup

CEBU, Philippines - Jave Peteros lost in his final match against Marphine Mangubat but it did not deter him from claiming the title of the fourth installment of the Little Wesley So Cup developmental chess tournament last Sunday at the Knight Attack Chess Cafe in Robinsons Galleria Cebu.

Peteros and Mangubat actually figured in a three-way tie with Lester Belano on identical 5.0 points but Peteros went on to pocket the P1,200 champion's purse by virtue of a superior tiebreaker applying the Bucholz system.

Belano, who subdued Arje Villarin in his last assigment, finished second followed by Mangubat. Belano got P700 and Mangubat P500 for their efforts.

Rolfred Lacanaria and Jervy Villarin were at joint fourth and fifth with 4.5 points while Arje Villarin and Lennox Samsom occupied the next two spots with 4.0 points.

Rounding up the top 12 finishers with 3.5 points each were Adelyn Bensi, Kym Sanchez, Jon Michael Sy, Kenneth Cogonon and Josh Regis.

The bimonthly tiff for aspiring pawnpushers aged 14 years old and below is being held in partnership with the Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association (CEPCA) under the dynamic leadership of Engrs. Jerry Maratas and Marvynne Guardiana, its president and vice president, respectively.

It aims to find talents in the grassroots level and help develop their skills so they will become competitive athletes capable of bringing honor and glory to the country in major competitions someday. (FREEMAN)
