USPF nips SWU to rule Oscar Jereza volleyball

CEBU, Philippines - The University of Southern Philippines Foundation belles dumped the Southwestern University-Phinma, 25-13, 25-17, 18-25, 25-15, to claim the championship of the 1st Oscar Jereza Jr. Volleyball Cup yesterday at the USPF court.

USPF advanced to the finals after beating SWU’s Team B, while the SWU spikers outsmarted the Sacred Heart School- Ateneo de Cebu in the semifinals.

SWU-Phinma tried hard to get back at USPF after losing in the previous tournaments, but could only win the third set during their encounter yesterday.

Earlier, USPF’s Team B also added reason for a victory party after snaring the bronze medal over SHS-AdC in straight sets, 25-7, 25-12.

Aside from a 1-3 finish, USPF also bagged several special awards with Jum Gayo as the Most Valuable Player, Tracy Cortes as the best attacker, Ana Cuerbo as best blocker and Lian Minoza as best libero. SWU-Phinma’s Mary Castillo was hailed as the best setter. (FREEMAN)
