Poblacion Occidental, Sacsac lead opening day winners in Lacion hoop

CEBU, Philippines - Barangays Poblacion Occidental and Sacsac came up with contrasting wins at the start of the 6th Mayor Teresa P. Alegado Fiesta Basketball League over the weekend in Consolacion, Cebu.

Katiw Armean sparkled with 21 points as Poblacion Occidental pulled of a 63-62 squeaker over Tugbungan in the inter-barangay category A, while Sacsac had little trouble in its 50-35 drubbing of Tilhaong in category B.

Kenneth Pepito and Clarence Reuyan conspired for 20 points for Poblacion Occidental, which dug deep at crunchtime to prevail over Tugbungan by the slimmest of margins.

On the other hand, Walter Magalen paced Sacsac with 17 points.

Rey Ruedas and Roland Nanong had 10 and seven points, respectively, for the winning side, which pounded Tilhaong from the outset on the way to establish a huge 43-25 lead after three quarters. Tilhaong groped for form the rest of the way.

 In the SK-juniors category A, Tugbungan bested Poblacion Occidental, 55-48, behind the 21-point explosion of Jerson Tumongha.

Benedict Tibon and Roniel Ybañez had 18 points combined for Tugbungan, which was in full command after cruising to a 23-17 halftime lead. Josh Isoto had 16 points in a losing cause for Poblacion Occidental.

Games of the month-long tournament are supervised by commissioner Paul Alule Q. Flores, a former FEU Tamaraws standout who played alongside PBA star Arwind Santos during their UAAP days.— EBV (FREEMAN)
