Magis Eagles to play at JAM 2014

Rico S. Navarro - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - A lean delegation will carry the colors of Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu when they participate at the Jesuit Athletic Meet 2014 at the Ateneo de Naga University Campus in Naga City, Camarines Sur. Games will be played from November 27 to 30 in the two campuses of the host school.

The Magis Eagles will be led by its boys high school basketball, football and table tennis teams.

At the drawing of lots, the basketball and football teams found themselves bunched in virtual groups of death. The basketball team is grouped with powerhouse Ateneo de Manila, Ateneo de Iloilo and Xavier University of Cagayan de Oro. The other group is comprised of Xavier School, Ateneo de Davao, Ateneo de Zamboanga and Ateneo de Naga.

In football, SHS-Ateneo is grouped with ADMU-A, Ateneo de Iloilo and Ateneo de Davao. The other group is made up of Xavier University of Cagayan de Oro, Xavier School, ADMU-B and Ateneo de Naga. The table tennis format will be a round robin classification among all participating schools.

This early, odds are ADMU and Xavier to clash in the finals, but the provincial teams will be out to prove that they can match up with the Manila teams. The JAM is held every two years for Jesuit-run schools in the country and is hosted by different schools on a rotating system. Games are played at both high school and college divisions with the Blue Eagles looming as both tournament and crowd favorites.

The likes of Kiefer Ravena, Thirdy Ravena, Von Pessumal, along with Cebuanos Koko Pingoy and Kris Porter are expected to see action for Coach Bo Perasol. Other events on tap include badminton, chess, volleyball, and lawn tennis. (FREEMAN)
