BFP-7 introduces transparent recruitment process
CEBU, Philippines — The Bureau of Fire Protection in Central Visayas (BFP-7) recently introduced what it calls a historic and transparent recruitment process, ensuring fairness and credibility in the selection of new firefighters.
BFP-7 regional director Fire Chief Superintendent Fred Trejanas Jr. announced that the original number of 1,184 applicants was trimmed down to 440 applicants and from there 136 were officially chosen to join the regional force through a draw-lots system witnessed by representatives from various government agencies and uniformed services.
“We believe this method is a crucial step in upholding the integrity of our recruitment system,” said Trajeras.
This initiative is part of BFP-7’s ongoing effort under the SANTINDIG or Isang Tinig, Isang Tindig, Kontra Korapsyon --to address negative public perceptions of corruption within their human resource system.
“We are dedicated to promoting fairness and integrity in all recruitment, transfer, and promotion processes, as we believe public trust is earned through consistent and principled action,” he said.
Trejanas said the region currently has 2,120 firefighters and with the 136 new recruits, this will bring the total to 2,256, although the ideal number should still be 2,608 to meet the standard ratio of one firefighter per 2,000 residents.
Central Visayas has a population of 5.2 million.
In his speech, Trajeras described the event as “the beginning of a profound transformation”, emphasizing the courage and dedication required of the newest batch of trainees.
“You are the individuals who will answer the call when everyone else runs away from danger, and the heroes who will embody our core values of honor, integrity, and dedication,” he told the recruits.
Trajeras highlighted the rigorous and transparent selection process that each candidate underwent, praising their physical endurance, mental resilience, and commitment to honest public service.
He reminded them that their inclusion was not by chance but by merit and divine providence.
“To those who may not make it this time, let me remind you: FAIL means First Attempt In Learning. In God’s perfect time, your moment will come,” he said.
To the successful recruits, he urged them to embrace the solemn responsibility of protecting lives and properties from fire.
“The badge you will soon wear is not just a symbol of authority, but a sacred trust from the people you will serve,” he added.
Trajeras also encouraged the 136 recruits to build lasting bonds of brotherhood and to rely on prayer as their strongest weapon in the face of challenges.
“We look forward to seeing you evolve, from aspiring applicants to full-blooded, well-disciplined firefighters, ready to uphold our legacy: a legacy of courage, honesty, and sacrifice,” he concluded. — (FREEMAN)
