Cebuano general is new Army chief

Gullas said Cebu is proud of the designation of Major General Andres Centino as the 63rd Commanding General of the Philippine Army.

CEBU, Philippines —  Cebu First District Rep. Eduardo Gullas has lauded the appointment of a Cebuano as commanding general of the biggest branch of military service in the country.

Gullas said Cebu is proud of the designation of Major General Andres Centino as the 63rd Commanding General of the Philippine Army.

“Cebu is proud of General Centino’s leadership and hard work. We wish him and our men and women in the Army every success,” said Gullas in a statement.

President Rodrigo Duterte signed Centino’s appointment on May 14, 2021.

According to Gullas, Centino was raised in Cebu by his father, a military lawyer, and his mother, a teacher and probation officer.

Centino finished his secondary education at the University of the Philippines Cebu High School. He is a member of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) Maringal Class of 1988.

Centino replaced Lt. Gen. Jose Faustino Jr., who is set to retire on November this year.  He will be formally installed today by Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana during a turnover of command ceremony in Fort Bonifacio.

Centino previously commanded the Army’s 4th Infantry ‘Diamond’ Division based in Northern Mindanao. He was also AFP’s former deputy chief of staff for operations.—  FPL (FREEMAN)
