Cebuano filmmakers urged to join Sinulog film festival

CEBU, Philippines — The Sinulog Foundation Inc. (SFI) is urging local filmmakers to participate in the short film contest to showcase their talent and artistry.

Cebu City Councilor David Tumulak, Sinulog executive committee chairman, said they want to promote local talents by showing their films to local and foreign tourists.

He said the masterpieces of the Sinulog short film finalists will be showcased after the festival, which is held every third Sunday of January in Cebu City in honor of Señor Santo Niño de Cebu.

“So sa 2019, pinakalahi nga Sinulog video festival nga himoon sa siyudad sa Sugbo kay ato man hatagan og pasidungog ang mga batan-on ug katong mga tiguwang nga movie makers,” Tumulak said.

“Makita nimo nga we develop local talents. One of the aims of SFI is to promote local talents,” he added.

Tumulak also encouraged local film makers to use Cebuano language.

 “Gi-encourage nato ang local movie makers nga to expand their creativity without pagwagtang sa bisaya nga pamaagi sa film making,” he said.

The judges will choose three best films with corresponding prizes— P100, 000 (first place), P50, 000 (second place), and P30, 000 (third place).

“So mag-expect ang katawhan nga sa Sinulog film festival would be brighter. And is also time to expand the talents, creativity sa atong mga movie makers diri sa Cebu to promote Visayan dialect,” Tumulak said.

Next month, film makers and artists are expected to submit their entries to SFI.

Aside from the short film contest, there will also be poster making contest, disc labeling contest, and Sinulog documentary contest.

The same set of prizes will be given for the documentary contest winners. For other contests, SFI has yet to discuss the prizes.

The prizes will be sourced from SFI account.

The Sinulog festival is one of the grandest and most colorful festivals in the Philippines. The festival is characterized by a very long parade and features some of the country’s most colorful displays of pomp and pageantry.  — KBQ (FREEMAN)
