Firm partners with Cebu City to give jobs to trained sewers

CEBU, Philippines —  A firm in Lapu-Lapy City will enter into a partnership with the Cebu City government which will provide employment to residents who are trained in sewing.

The Cebu City Council has authorized Mayor Tomas Osmeña to sign a memorandum of agreement with Metro Wear Inc. for livelihood training programs.

In an approved resolution, Councilor Sisinio Andales said that Metro Wear Inc. is a company in Lapu-Lapu City, which is engaged in apparel manufacturing for export and requires the services involving work or skills directly related to sewing and business operations.

“The parties believe that they can mutually maximize their resources and experience so as to provide employment to those qualified applicants/trainees,” reads portion of the MOA.

For the partnership with the city, Metro Wear Inc. will lend 30 sewing machines to the city and fabrics for the training program of city’s Department of Manpower Development and Placement (DMDP).

The Cebu City has committed to endorse 30 training graduates every month to Metro Wear Inc.

The city will also recruit and screen training applicants for high-speed sewing skills for a period of 21 working days with eight hours per day from Monday to Friday.

“Metro Wear Inc. will primarily supervise the training in accordance to the company standards; accommodate the training graduates for employment screening, trade testing and evaluation after the training and eventual employment,” reads a portion of the MOA.

Further, the city will provide transportation and other assistance to training graduates who will be endorsed to the Metro Wear Inc. for employment.

The City Council has approved the MOA last October 23’s regular session.

Metro Wear Inc., however, said it will not assure employment to all qualified training graduates since the hiring of manpower is dependent on the customer’s demand.

There will be no employer-employee relationship between the Metro Wear Inc. and the training graduates of the city.

The City Legal Office has already issued its favorable contract review.

The city government will provide all needed training materials like needles, bobbin case winders and singe needle presser foot and computer with LED television unit to serve as monitor for better viewing of videos and power point presentations. — MBG (FREEMAN)
