Woman killed while crossing street

CEBU, Philippines — A woman was killed when a military man onboard his motorcycle hit her while she was crossing the national highway of Barangay Makaas, Catmon, Cebu Wednesday afternoon.

Private Kevin Sumosa, 25, a member of the 53rd Brigade of Armed Forces of the Philippines, was on his way to their base camp in Medellin from Cebu City when he accidentally hit Marilyn Romero, who was in her 30s, while she was crossing the street.

SPO1 Ben Navales, investigator of the case, told The FREEMAN that Romero suffered serious head injuries and was thrown about two meters away from the point of impact.

Romero was immediately brought to the nearest hospital but she was declared dead on arrival by the attending physician.

Navales said based on their initial investigation, the victim was hesitant to cross the street and when Sumosa passed by, she was hit.

Sumosa, who also suffered minor injuries as he fell to the pavement after the impact, was also brought to the hospital.

He was released from police custody after reaching an amicable settlement with the family of the victim.

Navales said Sumosa assured the family to shoulder the burial expenses of the victim.  (FREEMAN)
