Police serving warrant: Robbery suspect shot dead in “gunfight” with police

CEBU, Philippines - A man was shot dead in a reported gunfight with the police who were serving an arrest warrant against him yesterday afternoon at Sitio Banawa, Barangay Guadalupe in Cebu City.

Judeniño Sombreno, a resident of the place, was declared dead on arrival at Cebu City Medical Center after he obtained gunshot wounds on his chest and head.

Guadalupe Police Station chief Chief Inspector Jose Gesto said the police implemented a warrant of arrest issued by Judge Marivic Trabaho-Daray of the Regional Trial Court Branch 17 for the robbery hold-up charge against Sombreno.

Sombreno reportedly ran away upon seeing the police going after him.

During the chase, Sombreno allegedly opened fire and hid inside a house where he was cornered by the arresting police officers.

According to the police, Sombreno did not surrender and even engaged in a gunfight with the police.

Gesto said Sombreno was also engaged in the illegal drug trade aside from being involved in robbery incidents, and a leader of a criminal gang included in the target of the Cebu City Police Office.

Police recovered a cal. 38 snub nose revolver from the suspect.

Meanwhile, a teenager is in critical condition after he allegedly shot himself to the head in an attempt to commit suicide, Saturday in Barangay Basdiot, Moalboal town.

John Michael Abangan, 18, is now fighting for his life at the hospital after sustaining a gunshot wound to the left side of his head.

Police Officer Niño 1 Ridaza of Moalboal Police Station said the victim allegedly tried to kill himself during an argument with his 19-year-old live-in partner Anabelina Sabanal inside their house on Saturday afternoon.

Abangan and Sabanal, who is seven months pregnant, figured in an argument after the latter allegedly found out that the former has a textmate.

In the middle of the argument, the victim allegedly got a firearm and aimed it on his head.

The live-in partner tried to stop the victim by holding his right arm, but the latter used his left hand in shooting himself, said Ridaza.

The victim was rushed to Badian District Hospital and was later transferred to Vicen-te Sotto Memorial Medical Center in Cebu City owing to his critical condition.

Responding police were able to recover a cal. 38 revolver with an empty shell inside its cylinder and a deformed slug from the couple's house. (FREEMAN)
