In typhoon-hit areas Geo-hazard mapping complete

The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - The Department of Environment and Natural Resources-7 has completed its geo-hazard mapping assessment in the municipalities severely damaged by super typhoon Yolanda in northern Cebu.

DENR-7 information officer Eddie Llamedo said 280 barangays were covered in the assessment. The areas were identified either as flood or landslide prone area.

Llamedo said copies of the assessment result were given to barangay captains whom they asked to look at and base their disaster risk reduction plan.

The DENR-7 officials also conducted information, education and communication campaign at the concerned barangays where they also distributed geo-hazard threat advisories.

Aside from the geo-hazard mapping, the DENR-7 also focused on beach forest and mangrove plantations having P3.5 million allocations from the agency.

Started on June 3, the geo-hazard mapping is part of the national government’s steps to ensure disaster resiliency.

The initiative prioritizes calamity-stricken areas, specifically last year’s super typhoon Yolanda, covering 16 local government units in northern Cebu.

These areas include Bantayan, Bogo City, Borbon, Daanbantayan, Madridejos, Medellin, Pilar, Poro, Tudela, and San Francisco in Camotes, San Remigio, Santa Fe, Sogod, Tabogon, Tabuelan, and Tuburan.

The data was given to local government units along with recommendations especially on prohibiting habitation and utilization of the land.  (FREEMAN)
