House helper takes life due to P3T debt

CEBU, Philippines - A 52-year-old woman reportedly claimed her own life in Barangay Bongoyan, Borbon, Wednesday afternoon due to a P3,000 debt that worried her.

Nelia Mangubat, a house helper, was found hanging with a rope looped around her neck by the 7-year-old son of the house owner past 4:30 p.m.

Initial investigation of the police disclosed that Mangubat was reportedly seen desperate for the past few days over her P3,000 debt to different people. This worried Nelia’s husband, Alexis Mangubat, as the victim had a history of a nervous breakdown.

Senior Police Officer 4 Morie Magdadaro, desk officer, said that when the boy arrived at their house and went to the comfort room, he saw Nelia hanging which prompted him to call for help.

Alexis arrived and tried to rescue Nelia by loosening the rope on the victim’s neck and rushed her to the Juan Dosado Memorial Hospital.

But she was declared dead on arrival by the attending physician.

“Matud pa sa bana nga duna na ni siya’y history sa nervous breakdown kung dili na kaya ang problema unya sa probinsiya kining P3,000 dako na man gud ni ilabi na katabang lang intawon ni,” Magdadaro said in a phone interview.

The family and relatives of the victim refused to subject the body to an autopsy as they were convinced that there was no foul play in the death of Nelia.  (FREEMAN)
