CH warns public: Don't litter to avoid citations

CEBU, Philippines — There will be Barangay Environmental Officers (BEOs) to be deployed in every public cemetery in Cebu City for the observance of Kalag-Kalag 2017 to enforce the anti-smoking and anti-littering ordinances of the city.

Councilor David Tumulak, deputy mayor for police matters, urged the public not to violate city ordinances to avoid getting citation tickets.

He added the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council will also be deploying disaster teams and ambulances in every public cemetery for a faster emergency response.

“Everything is in place, especially the security aspect, for the Kalag-Kalag.  I’m warning the public to refrain from throwing wastes anywhere especially the smokers,” Tumulak said in Cebuano.

Tumulak said there are 230 BEOs who are divided into 15 teams that will be deployed in every public cemetery in the city.

The Department of Public Services will also deploy street cleaners.

DPS Head Roberto Cabarrubias said his office is expecting more volume of garbage as compared to regular days.

Aside from the BEOs, Tumulak said there are also members of barangay intelligence network (BINs) to be deployed in the cemeteries to help in maintaining the peace and order situation in the areas.

“Our BINs will assist in every cemetery and our Bureau of Fire auxiliary is also on full alert to keep the peace and order,” Tumulak said.

Mayor Tomas Osmeña, for his part, asked the people to be aware of suspicious items that are left behind.

“If a basket is on the ground and it was not there five minutes earlier, call the police. Something like that. Even a garbage can, a chair, or anything because an IED (improvised explosive device) is not designed to look like an IED,” he said.

Osmeña added the authorities need the cooperation of the public since there is always a “risk” in the city’s peace and order.

“We are at risk because the others, the terrorist suffered a lot,” he said, adding that there should be no room for complacency. (FREEMAN)
