Sport Fishing

The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Sport fishing is a form of recreational fishing where the primary reward is the challenge of finding and catching the fish, rather than the culinary or financial value of the catch. Although fishing is widely known as means of livelihood in the Philippines, the growing population of sport fishers is slowly making a name in Philippine sports.

Lesser admired than basketball and volleyball, sport fishing is becoming the hobby of many people who find the sport relaxing. Another appeal of sport fishing is that it is a friendly sport where families can fish together and enjoy.

In fishing, the thrill lies in the challenge of waiting for the fish to take the bait, and especially, reeling when there is already a catch. It gives self-fulfillment and stress relief.

Going out into the near open waters, instead limiting themselves to fish ponds, serves as a practice point for groups of sport fishers in Cebu. It’s how they prepare themselves for fishing tournaments. Several places are the common favorites.

Porter Marina Fun Fishing and Grill House

Porter Marina is located in Liloan, Cebu, nearly an hour away northeast from Cebu City. With P100 entrance fee, the venue is good for sport fishers and their families. There are huge fishing ponds with bangus, tilapia, barramundi (seabass), lapu-lapu (grouper), mangagat (snapper), and kitong (spadefish) , and fishers may cook their catch in the grill house. The grill house also serves a variety of the best-loved dishes and house specialties. Fishers may opt for a more challenging fishing experience by the sea.

Naga City Baywalk Park

Naga City prides of its well-designed public baywalk plaza, which is just a 30-minute drive from downtown Cebu City. The place is an excellent fishing spot for people who want a real challenge. Fish like needlefish, crescent grunters, and jacks are quite in abundance in the seaside of Naga City. Food stores, tennis courts and playgrounds are also found in the plaza, making it a family-friendly place.

Mandaue Bridge Park

Mandaue Bridge Park is a small public family park located under the Marcelo Fernan Bridge on the Mactan Island side. A few minutes’ drive from Cebu City, it is a free fishing spot for sport fishers. Groupers, snappers, eels, emperors, trevally, and barracuda are said to come aplenty here, making the fishing experience really fun.

Cebu has a lot more good fishing destinations. One only has to search a little or ask around to find those other fishing venues.  (Reference: fishingthephilippines.com)
