"Design a Smile"

CEBU, Philippines - "Smile and the whole world smiles with you." This was the theme of a design contest that gave children the opportunity to showcase their artistic talents. The competition also aimed to create awareness and raise funds for Operation Smile Philippines, a non-profit organization that offers life-changing surgeries to children with cleft lips and cleft palates - for free.

The contest was spearheaded by the famous Brazilian flip-flops brand Havaianas. The brand is known for bringing forth the fun and sunshine of everyday, no matter where and when. "Design a Smile" challenged children to design their one-of-a-kind Havaianas pair, with each design illustrating a creative answer to the question: "What will you do to make other people smile?"

A good number of kids participated. Different designs - all playful and bright - were turned in. The one created by 13-year-old Jessica Dale Bautista, from Tarlac, came out the winner. For sure, this was one big reason to smile for the girl, who shared that "Making other people smile makes me smile."

Jessica joined the contest to make her family proud, as well as help spread the good word about Operation Smile. With colored pencils and creative imagination, the girl created the winning design that hinted on art being both an expression and impression of happiness. The animated sprites and elements, and the dynamic personification of everyday surroundings, her pop-culture inspired artwork is a clear representation of the one currency that Jessica believes should be universal - a smile.

"A smile is all positive, nothing negative," Jessica beams. "A smile is a way to communicate [our general understanding and concern for one another]."

A percentage from the proceeds of each pair of Havaianas "Smile" goes to Operation Smile Philippines, to fund the reconstructive surgeries and healthcare of kids with facial deformities. Havaianas are available nationwide at All Flip-Flops stores; in Cebu, at the Ayala Center Cebu, Northwing of SM City Cebu, SM City Consolacion, and Rustan's. More information at: www.havaianas.com.
