[Summary] => The Department of Environment and Natural Resources and Philippine Wood Producers Association have signed a joint agreement to convert Smokey Mountain in Tondo, Manila into a city forest. That is a project that is most welcomed and that could turn Manila into a greener city. Right now, Manila has only Arroceros Forest as its only forested area. It would be great if Smokey Mountain were converted into its second forest.

[Summary] => Thanks to Speaker Jose de Venecia, at long last we will have a Philippine Botanical Garden that will be the very first Philippine Science and Technology Park in the country. It will sprout in the Diliman Complex of Quezon City. One of our earliest childhood memories was the Jardin Botanico in Manila that was later expanded to a Zoo that included an elephant. We also had an aquarium. The aquarium survives in Intramuros, but, sad to say, it has not developed with the times.

Atienza said he is trying to finalize the design of the CCM building, which will soon rise at the Mehan Garden along Arroceros street, near the Central station of the Light Rail Transit (LRT).
The mayor said the project would surely help the city government provide quality education to poor but deserving children in the country’s capital.

Last Tuesday, June 5, was World Environment Day. The Heritage Conservation Society (HCS) decided to celebrate it with a morning picnic at the splendid Arroceros Forest Park by the Pasig River. The picnic was a celebration of the fact that there were still some clean and green areas in this smog-engulfed, olfactorically-offensive city. It was also an occasion to reach out to the public and to government officials with a call to save the fast disappearing heritage of the city’s architecture and parks.
