Happy New Year!

IN MY BASKET - Lydia D. Castillo - The Philippine Star

Let’s be optimistic about the year 2018. We are hoping that life will be better. We have a few thoughts, wishes actually.

Foremost of these are harmony among members of each family, that parents will be more sensitive to the needs of their children.

Then we strongly wish and exhort those responsible for a solution to the chaotic traffic situation in the metropolis. This is probably wishful thinking, for with limited roads/passage ways, how can vehicles avoid clogging the streets? The year 2017 had commuters wasting  much time, money and energy  idling in clogged avenues, roads and streets. The number-coding scheme was not much help. People just bought cars with different plate numbers. Solutions?

Take the cargo trucks, buses away from the main arteries? But where to bring them? No roads! Build special highways/overpasses for them? Do-able? We wonder.

As homemaker – we need to see market inspectors conscientiously doing their jobs, to protect us from scrupulous vendors. Control ready-cooked food sold in supermarkets, that they will not continue to put on their racks nearly spoiled food. Inspect vegetable packs that include rotting pieces. Strict price control. Impose sanitation rules strictly, especially on food servers. Correct weight and measures, put back the weighing machines in every wet market.

Our “Ensaymada Overload” piece had some feedback. A visiting US-based nephew cited the yummy ensaymada sold at the Legaspi weekend market. A reader, Doc ED, said that in Obando, Bulacan, the ensaymada is made with generous amounts of macapuno and ube. Our group of ensaymada fans now plans to hold an ensaymada mini-festival, with each one bringing her own favorite. Indeed the ensaymada saga lives on.

Have a good ensaymada break!
