Pinoy cue masters roll on
MANILA, Philippines — Nine Pinoy cue masters led by Carlo Biado continued their charge and won their second straight matches in the US Open Pool Championship Tuesday at the Hannah’s Resort in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
World No. 14 Biado stamped his class on Canadian Vincent Beaurivage, 9-3, to set up an explosive second-round showdown with two-time champ Mika Immonen of Finland.
Like Biado, Dennis Orcollo also went two-for-two via a 9-2 spanking of American Paul Spaanstra, and drew 2001 US Open kingpin Corey Deuel for his next opponent.
Deuel defeated countryman Pedro Botta, 9-4, while Immonen edged American Michael Yednak, 9-7.
Also advancing to the winners’ side Round 2 were Filipinos Roland Garcia, Jeff de Luna, Jeff Ignacio, Johann Gonzales, James Aranas, Roberto Gomez and Warren Kiamco.
Garcia outclassed Polish Konrad Juszczyszyn, 9-6, while De Luna, Ignacio, Gonzales, Aranas, Gomez and Kiamco hurdled their respective foes from the US – Bill Meacham (9-2), Shaun Wilkie (9-4), Kelson Juan (9-2), John Hennigan (9-4), Lukas Fracasso-Verner (9-5) and Justin Espinosa (9-7).
The 10th Filipino in Tuesday’s action – Daniel Dagotgot – bowed to Scottish star and 2017 ruler Jayson Shaw, 0-9, to head to the losers’ side. He later lost to Venezuelan Jesus Atencio, 8-9, to join countryman Dan Segui in the exits.
