Lady Stags edge Bombers, near NC semifinals

MANILA, Philippines – San Sebastian bucked coach Roger Gorayeb’s absence as it downed Jose Rizal U, 25-12, 25-16, 26-24, yesterday to close in on a Final Four berth in the women’s division of the 91st NCAA volleyball tournament at Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

Gretchel Soltones unloaded a match-best 21 hits, including 18 attack points, as the Lady Stags nailed their sixth straight victory and a win away from clinching the first semis spot.

San Sebastian did it in the absence of Gorayeb, who served a one-game suspension for unsportsmanlike conduct.

“We just executed the same game plan coach (Gorayeb) wants us to do,” said San Sebastian assistant coach Clint Malazo in Filipino.

The Lady Bombers fell to 3-4.

In men’s action, Letran pulled the rug from under San Beda, 25-19, 25-23, 23-25, 26-24, while San Sebastian warded off Jose Rizal U, 25-23, 25-15, 25-22.
